This week in class we discussed Stefan Schirmer and his essays on his impression of American culture. The thing that stuck out to me most during out discussion was when Schirmer said, "The magic word is globalization." Although many countries are same and all cultures are unique, the world we live in is being globalized every minute. By globalized I mean that although we are different countries we share some of the same things. For example in the article Schirmer explains how Europe and America both eat the same watery Holland tomatoes, have a plethora of cereal brands, and the most popular one, Coca-Cola. While globalization stuck out, I also realized how different cultures can be. Stefan Schirmer explains how Americans must always be on the saving side. Here in America we love our deals. Also, in Europe they have a shop-closing law that enforces that it is unlawful for a store to be open on a Sunday. In America is it thought to be unlawful if a store is not open. Europeans think if Sunday as a family oriented day. I personally do as well, but my Sunday consists of my mom going to the grocery store and running her errands while my dad and I watch football, then later on we will share family time by eating a family dinner. It is interesting how cultures are so different, even when it comes to such simple things as when a store is open. 24/7 is the American way.
