Community Service

This past week I volunteered for Shriners hospital. It was a bitter sweet experience. I talked to one of the mothers, and happened to gain an experience I will never forget. The mother had told me how her daughter, who was a bright and beautiful girl, had suffered tragic accident. The mother explained how her daughter had worried about how people would look at her. Which had me thinking of all the times I've stared at someone in a wheel chair. Not that the staring was to judge someone, but it was hard to look away because of the curiosity I had. However, the person in the wheel chair doesn't know that it is just curiosity. I also learned the amount of bullying that happens between disabled kids and kids who are able to walk. It is unfortunate to see the amount of ignorance some people have.
While visiting I had also been told something that I believe will stay with me for forever. The daughter had said, "It's amazing how within 15 seconds your life can change." I thought that was the most eye opening statement I had heard in a long time. So many of us, including myself, take advantage of the fact that we can walk, drive, eat, and do the most basic things without needing help; when the girl I had met, only wishes she could be independent again. As cheesy as it is, everyone really does need to live their lives to the fullest, because maybe one day we may not have the same opportunity of life anymore.
