This week in class we talked about agents of socialization, which are groups that we are a part of that shape us throughout our life. Family is one of the agents of socializations, which I agree has the greatest impact on a person. Every family intentionally and unintentionally teaches things to the younger generations. For example my parents have taught me how to behave in certain situations, how to remain active [my family is big on sports], and how family is the most important thing to have. But they have also unintentionally taught my brother and I about careers. I haven't experienced it yet, but my brother who is in college is following the exact life plan my dad has been going through for the past 20 years. My brother is attending the same college, the same business school, and would like to work in the same field as my father once had. Also, I notice as I'm deciding on where to go for school, I'm leaning towards interior design which is similar to the field my mom studied and worked in for 25 years.
Another agent I consider to be a great impact in my life is sports. I played volleyball from 7th grade up until this year on both the school volleyball team and for a club volleyball team. Throughout volleyball my coaches intentionally taught me how hard work and teamwork are the keys to success [on and off the courts]. In order to get places one must work hard and sometimes it is with a team. The lessons from volleyball carried over to school as well. In order to achieve or get the grade I want, I must work hard and in many classes it is with a team setting for a project. We are all shaped by the agents of socialization and they can carry over from each situation at times.
I completely agree with you, our families and other parts of our lives influence us more than we think.I think it's so amazing how you and your brother are following in your parents' footsteps, it really shows the power of that unintentional influence.
ReplyDeleteI agree that families are the greatest influence on our lives and that they both intentionally and unintentionally affect our lives. I liked your real life example of your career path.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree. Its really funny how we are so influenced by our parents and we don't even realize it. The people we love the most have the biggest impact on our lives.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you in that family is the most important agent of socialization. The influence us unintentionally which affects our lives when we are older. Also good example with your dad and your brother career path/ life paths.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. A lot of people are really influenced by there parents that they will probably end up with the same job as them.
