What would you do?

This week for class we read a short story titled The Survivors of the F-227 by James M. Henslin. In the story you find out that the survivors of a plane crash must eat the deceased bodies of the passengers who unfortunately didn't survive the plane crash. At the end of the story there is a question that I couldn't and still can't seem to get over; "What would you do?" I have had several discussions with different class mates- it seems that the boys are tough and say they would do it to survive, while the girls can barely finish reading the story and are disgusted that the survivors ate the bodies. Although I eat meat almost everyday, although they were just bodies and the souls have gone away, although they weren't able to eat certain parts of the body, and although the survivors needed food to live...I still cannot see myself being able to do such a thing. I think this is because the way our society has taught us what to think.Social construction of reality is the way society and people create an experience. The only time you hear of someone eating a body is when a cold blooded murderer is interviewed in real life or a hollywood horror film; but never in reality. I'm still unsure on what I would do, and I don't believe I'll ever know unless I'm in that situation, but until then what would you do?

  1. Yes - I think your eating has been socially constructed to make you feel gross about eating another person, but using your sociological imagination, can you see hoe the survivors created a new social construction of reality and perhaps if you were a part of that, you might be able to do it to survive? Also, can you give your own example of social construction of reality? Perhaps being able to eat meat everyday? or when you eat certain meats? Use an example from your own life.
