At the beginning of the year my teacher had us write simple paragraph explaining who we were. Through being in the class I have learned several new things.
At the beginning of the year I said, "The biggest influences in my life would be my friends and family. I think that the people you surround yourself with are what you are all about." I also wrote "My goals in life are to attend college and become a special education teacher." It is interesting to look back and see that I thought my only influences were my friends and family. Through learning in class there are many factors that play into the person we are. Although friends and family play a roll, there are many outside factors as well. For example being an American plays a huge roll, living in the suburbs as oppose to inner city, etc. My goals are also impacted by the great influences of sociological imagination. By me living in the suburbs and attending a large high school which is surrounded by wealthy communities I have the goal of going to college. If I did live in the inner city I'm sure my goals would be to high school graduate or if anything just survive day to day. In class I have also learned to become more sociological mindful. I have learned to understand others and that everyone has a story. Before doing the cliché judging a book by it's cover, try to understand who that person is and what situation they are in.
Sociology was one of if not the best class I have taken. I am now able to walk away with the understand of so much about the world. The media has such power in brain washing us to think certain things. Through this class I can now understand that what the media portrays this world to be isn't half of what it really is. For example, we learned that all woman are portrayed as being vulnerable while men get to unemotional and strong in all advertising campaigns. This is a perfect example of the media and such stereotypes; but without that lesson I NEVER would have noticed that.
Although stereotypes are hard to just forget about and will probably be a hard habit to break, I will now try my best to not jump to conclusions and stereotypes I once though previous to this class.
Also, I learned all cultures are different and for Americans it may be weird that Japanese bathrooms consist of a toilet room then a bathing room, for Japanese I'm sure they think Americans are dirty for combining the two rooms. Little things I've learned throughout this class will really change and has really changed my perspectives on life.
"I will just have to see where life takes me. Like I said before, who knows exactly who they are or where they will end up?"
Wherever I end up, I know that I am now more sociological mindful and can now change ways I view things and people.
