Before break we discussed racism and had watched a movie called Crash. Racism is associated with stereotypes. For example in the movie one stereotype that wasn't verbally shown but shown by actions was that black people would never drive a nice SUV or have a luxury vehicle. Ludacris's character had always said at the beginning of the movie that he would never rob a black man. However, on one of the days in the movie he put a gun to a mans face who was driving a nice SUV...and the man was black. Another stereotype portrayed in the movie was when the Asian man was driving a work truck. I thought throughout the movie that he was a hard worker, but wasn't doing anything wrong. However, at the end of the movie you find out that the Asian man was selling and trafficking people. In my life, unfortunately, I have held many stereotypes. For example in school all the Asians are considered to be genius and bookworms while all the black kids are considered to be great athletes and if they don't prove to be then "there has got to be something wrong." I believe that the media plays a huge roll in portraying these stereotypes. Although there is nothing you can do about the media because they will always show news to confirm people's stereotype, you can recommend this movie to people. Through this movie becoming so popular hopefully people can become knowledgeable about racism. It's understandable that there will always be racism, however, through this movie it opened many minds, including mine. Like Sandra Bullocks character many people try to hide their racism and then can crack at times; however, if people understand that racism occurs they can try to find ways to understand others. At the end of the day we're all on the same planet, so we have to learn to live with each other.
